This Saturday, a group of volunteers from Concorde spent the day taking families supported by Candlelighters on a barge trip. The Leeds-based charity that helps children with cancer, was voted Concorde’s Charity of the Year for 2016. When the opportunity arose to offer this experience, the team were happy to get involved.
The sunny six hour journey gave the children plenty of opportunity to learn about driving the barge and working the locks. When not busy with this, they could be seen being entertained with activities and of course lunch.
The boat was hired from Wakefield District Scout Narrowboats – a local charitable organisation. Our thanks to Chris Stead for helping to organise this.
Concorde’s Managing Director, Neil Roberts commented; “It was really rewarding to hear the families talk about how the team had made a positive impact on those children’s lives today. One father told me how his little girl was so reclusive and shy but today he had seen a different girl he hadn’t seen for a long time. I’m really proud of the team, especially Chris who devised the idea.”
